BIOGRAPHY

Born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, in 1928. Early in his career, he adopted the name of his native state as a pseudonymous suranme.

After studying in different art schools in both the United States and Europe, Indiana finally settled in New York in 1956. In the early 1960s, Indiana developped his style, utilizing every day symbols, such as letters, words and numbers as his foundation, and made them into brillantly colored geometric pop art.

Those vivid colours works, earned him a reputation as one of the country's leading contemporary artists. As a result, several of his works are now displayed in major museums and in private auctions around the world. In 1964, he even collaborated with the great Andy Warhol.

Throughout all his works, whether they be paintings, art prints, or sculptures, Indiana continues to redefine the basic concepts of "Eat", "Die" and "Love". Through his use of bold block letters in vivid colours, Iniana's works continue to entice his viewers to see commonplace from an entirely new perspective.

A lasting mark of Indiana's success was in 1973, when his immensely popular multi-colored "LOVE" appeared on a United States postage stamp.
