BIOGRAPHY

Gilli, who was born in 1926, is an artist of the « School of Nice », a movement characterized by a refusal of traditonal art on the part of its founders (Klein, Arman, Ben, Gilli…)

Already in 1962, his first works displayed an originality akin to the spirit of Pop Art, and by 1965 his works had acquired the distinctive style so typical of Gilli. It was at this time that he developed his pictures in relief, plywood shapes arranged on several planes. The brightly coloured varnish finish gives his works their distinctive energy and force; his favourite themes are : Nice, the female body and, above all, Mediterranean landscapes.

In 1999 the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Nice (MAMAC), situated at 89 promenade des Arts, together with the city of Nice, honoured Gilli by organizing a number of exhibitions and by acquiring some of his works.
