French sculptor born in Marseilles César was born as César
Baldaccini. Studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Marseilles, 1935-9
and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris 1943-8. Started to make sculptures
by soldering together pieces of metal in 1952 and first made his reputation
with those soldered sculptures of fantastic representation of insects
and various kinds of animals.
Began in 1960 to make his famous “compressions” by compressing
car bodies or metal objects of all kinds crushed into dense packages
and later the same year like Arman, Klein, Tinguely and others, Cesar
joined the French New Realism movement which found its inspiration
in urban life. by 1960 César was considered one of France's
leading sculptors. In that year he astonished his followers by showing
three crushed cars at a Paris exhibition. It was for these 'Compressions'
that César became really renowned.
Pop-Art also left its marks on his oeuvres specially with his coloured
molten plastic objects formed as ironic object fetishes. From 1966
he created his “Expansions” (polyurethane solidify foam
sculptures) and the same year gave up making soldered metal sculpture.
Organised a series of Happenings from 1967-70 in which he produced
expansions in the presence of an audience. His later works also include
sculptures made out of molten crystal.
